Angora

From the Angora Rabbit

Angora

Angora fibre comes from the Angora rabbit. There are several noted breeds of Angoras, including the English and French Angora, Giant and Satin. The English Angora is generally larger in size and has larger ears than the French, but both produce amazing fibre for spinning in great abundance. The Satin has been developed for a little more lustre.

These animals have to be brushed or plucked to remove shedding fibre at a minimum of every two weeks, so they are quite a commitment in terms of work to their owners. The staple length will vary on individual animals and from different places on their anatomy. Useable fibre can range from 1 inch to 5 inches, and has a very fine micron count and fine crimp. Angora is one of the softest fibres to wear, and finished garments will have a bloom or halo making the garment look fuzzy and soft. The fibre is a treat to spin, and you can actually spin with a rabbit on your lap and pluck as you go.

The care of the animals is crucial, as the fur will matt quickly if not cared for. The animal can become fur bound.
